The trap may have been poured out on the surface as a Massachusetts book overflow after the deposition of the underlying sandstone, and the overlying sandstone may have been subsequently deposited upon the cooled and hardened surface of the trap. It was prominently involved in the engagements pursuing the retreating British Army after the battles of Lexington and Concord. The rocks with the exception of the limestone and coal have evidently been derived from the disintegration of the older rocks outside of the basin, the strata of conglomerate often containing pebbles whose source can be recognized with some degree of definiteness.
